Juried Photo Show
Division III: Photography
The Photography Division of this year’s show could only accommodate about sixteen photographs, and the number of submissions to GCA shows continues to rise, so the judging is juried. The jury reviews entries and chooses six finalists in each class. An exhibitor may enter only one class in the Photography Division.
It is not an easy task to jury an exhibition. Imagine a power point presentation with over 100 photographs in it. Then imagine trying to reduce that number to just sixteen photographs. This is what jurors do. And they are often faced with the task of choosing from a number of wonderful treatments of a given theme. They spend sleepless nights mulling over their choices and dreaming about the photographs. It is an intense, engrossing task and in the end there are always photos they wish they had been able to include, but could not.
A photograph previously entered in any GCA, GCA Major, Sanctioned Non-GCA Major Flower Show or a GCA Focus online contest may not be entered again even with slight alterations. This includes photographs entered in juried shows that did not pass into the finalist stage. The same photograph may only be entered in one show at a time.
Prior to the initial evaluation phase of judging, each photograph is passed by the Photography Committee to verify that class specifications have been met. If a photograph is not passed, the exhibitor is notified and allowed, if time permits, to send a replacement photograph.
Resizing Photos for GCA Juried Shows
When entering juried GCA photography shows, advanced registration is required. An entrant is asked to submit a JPEG image (usually 2MB – 5MB in the sRGB colorspace) of the photo being entered. ‘MB’ is an abbreviation for megabyte which is the amount of digital information included in the image or in other words, the file size. Depending on the show, you may be asked to email the image or you might be required to upload it to web. Emailing a file larger than 5MB can be slow and some email programs limit the size of files that can be sent and received.
